Poem: Lucy

(for my grandmother)

The mask I wear is
too heavy for this small face
It is Lucy's her eyes looking back at me
her hands claiming mine
the mystic M
forcing me to see things
do things
mocking me with voices
in the night
telling me
so you thought
it was your idea
and when I tried
to remove it
found it had claimed me
my skin wrapped around it.

by Deborah ClaytonWainhouse

Someone asked me for this. It was formerly printed in the Harlem Arts Journal
